IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

IBS is a mix of abdominal discomfort or pain & trouble with bowel habits i.e.
Continuous or recurrent symptoms of abdominal pain with one of the following:
Relief by defecation
Change in stool consistency (thin, hard, soft & liquid)
Change in stool frequency ( >3 times per day or <3 times per week)
Altered stool passage (straining, urgency, incomplete evacuation.)
Passage of mucus.
Abdominal bloating.
It is not life threatening but IBS can be a long lasting problem that changes how you live your life.
Symptoms:
Pain in lower half of the abdomen which gets worse after meals and feel better after a bowel movement.
A lot of gas or bloating.
Constipation.
Diarrhoea.
Constipation alternate with diarrhoea.
Causes:
Stress.
Depression.
Coexistent inflammatory bowel diseases.
Abnormal colonic bacterial flora.
Diagnosis:
No specific lab tests that can diagnose IBS.
Our doctor will see if your symptoms relate with the definition of IBS.
Treatment:
Manage things which trigger IBS symptoms including certain foods, medicines, & emotional stress.
Some life style changes & medication.
Diet & lifestyle changes:
Avoid caffeine.
Add more fibres to your diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grain &nuts.)
Drink 3 to 4 litter water per day.
Avoid smoking & alcohol.
Learn to relax yourself by exercise, yoga & meditation.
