Quick Fact check (WHO):
•Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and is responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. Globally, about 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer.
•Approximately 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries.
•Around one third of deaths from cancer are due to the 5 leading behavioral and dietary risks: high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol use.
•Tobacco use is the most important risk factor for cancer and is responsible for approximately 22% of cancer deaths.
•Cancer causing infections, such as hepatitis and human papilloma virus (HPV), are responsible for up to 25% of cancer cases in low- and middle-income countries (3).
•Late-stage presentation and inaccessible diagnosis and treatment are common. In 2017, only 26% of low-income countries reported having pathology services generally available in the public sector. More than 90% of high-income countries reported treatment services are available compared to less than 30% of low-income countries.
•The economic impact of cancer is significant and is increasing. The total annual economic cost of cancer in 2010 was estimated at approximately US$ 1.16 trillion (4).
•Only 1 in 5 low- and middle-income countries have the necessary data to drive cancer policy (5).

WHAT IS CANCER IN SIPMPLER TERMS?!
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. It can affect almost any part of the body. The growths often invade surrounding tissue and can metastasize to distant sites. Many cancers can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke.

Causes
Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cells.
The DNA inside a cell is packaged into a large number of individual genes, each of which contains a set of instructions telling the cell what functions to perform, as well as how to grow and divide.
Errors in the instructions can cause the cell to stop its normal function and may allow a cell to become cancerous.

Gene mutations occur frequently during normal cell growth. However, cells contain a mechanism that recognizes when a mistake occurs and repairs the mistake.
Occasionally, a mistake is missed. This could cause a cell to become cancerous.

It’s not clear just how many mutations must accumulate for cancer to form. It’s likely that this varies among cancer types.

Types:

1. Benign (HARMLESS):
These are not cancerous. They either cannot spread or grow, or they do so very slowly. If a doctor removes them, they do not generally return.

2. Malignant (HARMFULL):
Malignant tumors are cancerous. The cells can grow and spread to other parts of the body.
It is not always clear how a tumor will act in the future. Some benign tumors can become premalignant and then malignant. For this reason, it is best to monitor any growth.
Risk Factors for Cancer
It is usually not possible to know exactly why one person develops cancer and another doesn’t.

But research has shown that certain risk factors may increase a person’s chances of developing cancer.
– Exposure to chemicals or other substances.
-They also include things people cannot control, like age and family history.
-A family history of certain cancers can be a sign of a possible inherited cancer syndrome.
Some of these risk factors here can be avoided, others—such as growing older—cannot!!
Limiting your exposure to avoidable risk factors may lower your risk of developing certain cancers.
