The global prevalence of diabetes* among adults over 18 years of age has risen from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014 (1).
Diabetes prevalence has been rising more rapidly in middle- and low-income countries.
Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.
In 2016, an estimated 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes. Another 2.2 million deaths were attributable to high blood glucose in 2012**.
Almost half of all deaths attributable to high blood glucose occur before the age of 70 years. WHO estimates that diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in 2016.
Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use are ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with diet, physical activity, medication and regular screening and treatment for complications.

What is DIABETES?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high.
Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat.

Insulin is a hormone made by organ pancreas helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy.
Sometimes your body
1. Doesn’t make enough
2. Make no insulin
3. Does’t use insulin well.

Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems.

What are the different types of DIABETES?
The most common types of diabetes are:
- Type-1
- Type-2
- Gestational diabetes.

TYPE 1 DIABETES:
If you have TYPE 1 DIABETES, it means body doesn’t make insulin.
Your immune system attacks & destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin.
Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children & young adults, although it can appear at any age.
People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to stay alive.

TYPE 2 DIABETES
If you have TYPE 2 DIABETES, your body does not make or use insulin well.
You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age , even during childhood.
However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle- aged & older people.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

For some reason, the immune system mistakenly attacks & destroys insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas

TYPE 2 DIABETES
It stems from a combination of genetics & lifestyle factors.
Being overweight or obese increases your risk too.
Carrying extra weight, especially in your belly, makes your cells more resistant to the effects of insulin on your blood sugar.
This condition runs in families (if no one runs in the family 🙂 active lifestyle helps prevent and/or manage diabetes)
Family members share genes that make them more likely to get type 2 diabetes and to be overweight.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES
It is the result of hormonal changes during pregnancy.
The placenta produces hormones that make a pregnant women’s cells less sensitive to the effects of insulin. This can cause high blood sugar during pregnancy.

PP2BS – Post prandial – 2 hourly blood sugar – helps detect blood sugar 2 hours after eating which means how has the body utlilised sugar.

The average norms are available in blood reports but always rely on your doctor for the interpretation of reports and never change/stop the dose of medications without being told to do so.
